Caladon Monteray

Biography

Caladon was a captain in the Ostar navy but was drummed out when it was discovered he was taking a kickback for ignoring certain vessels carrying slaves to Karbraith.

Drimig

While serving in the navy Caladon sailed north to Tring. On shore leave he ventured into the surrounding desert and happened upon a Drimig. He captured the creature as a curiosity.

The creature became frantic oh the dockside, becoming so agitated that Caladon had to have a local sedate the creature before taking it aboard ship. The local explained that Drimig are hydrophobic to an extreme. They can only be maintained in a warm dry place.

If a Drimig is near exposed water it will do everything in its power to move away.

What Caladon did not appreciate until much later was that he had captured a juvenile.

Years later, after being driven out of the navy, Caladon made his way south and eventually to Harnott where he acquired the Spirit. He roomed the Drimig in his bunk initially, as he had in the past, but the creature soon became too large to keep in such a small space so Caladon moved it into a storeroom in the stern hold.

One fateful day the Spirit was becalmed. Desparate after nearly a week in the doldrum Caladon went into the storeroom with a desparate and cruel plan. He rationalised this as a necessary evil, just this once. The secured the Drimig with manacles to the stern port and starboard hull ribs, then brought in a sealed barrel.

Once in position he uncovered the barrel to reveal the water within. Predictably the Drimig, now full grown, pulled away. Drimig are magical creatures and can fly, even though they have no wings. It pulled against the chains with such force they almost broke but they held and the Spirit began to move. Slowly at first but with increasing speed.

After several hours a cry from above announced that the sails had caught wind. Caladon recovered the barrel and removed it from the room.

He locked the room again, leaving the Drimig in chains.

It was not the last time the creature was abused in this way. In fact Caladon had two troughs installed with a system of ropes attached to levers in his bunk. These levers where concealed in a writing desk and the crew were never informed.
